This week we chose to talk about the cheer team! We also interviewed Coach Haggerty. Let’s see what Coach Haggerty and the team have to say!
Here are the questions that we asked Coach Haggerty, along with her answers:
What is the best score in cheer we have gotten?
“79”
What are some new skills we learned?
“We are currently working on pulling body positions and extended libs.”
What is one of the hardest stunts we are working on?
“Full twisted cradles.”
What is the hardest tumbling skill in comp?
“Round off back handspring series to a layout.”
What is the hardest cheer team you’ve gone against in comp?
“The reigning state champions.”
Where did you get the idea ‘Champions’ for the theme?
“The cheerleaders submitted ideas, and coaches picked what the theme was.”
Now we interviewed a majority of the cheerleaders. Let’s see what they said about the questions we asked them:
Sophia Dunbar
What’s the hardest stunt we’ve done and why?
“Doing a lib for the first time because it was my first time.”
What do you want to improve in cheer and why?
“Probably my back tuck because I want to.”
What is your favorite floor cheer and why?
“Probably ‘Look Out We’re Back’ because it’s really fun and the whole crowd gets pumped up.”
What stunt do you want to learn and why?
“A scorpion because I can already do a scorpion on the ground; I just need to do it in the air.”
Explain what you wanted to try in cheer:
“I want to try to get better with my stunts because I’ve had plenty of people fall.”
What else do you want to add?
“8th grade I want to be a flyer for cheer.”
Sophie Gould
What’s the hardest stunt we’ve done so far and why?
“I’d honestly say the hardest stunt would either be our half-up libs to extension and cradle, or our extended libs straight cradle with a scorpion.”
What do you want to improve in cheer and why?
“I personally really want to be able to hit my back handspring by the state comp, February 11th, either that or hit it by next tryouts.”
What’s your favorite floor cheer and why?
“My favorite floor cheer would probably be the one where we go ‘Eureka Hornets Winning Tonight…’ because we get to do a show and go Baja.”
What stunt do you want to learn and why?
“I probably want to learn a Ruby Slipper to a fall down, just because we started on them at the beginning of the season and never quite finished, and they look really cool.”
Explain what you want to try in cheer:
“I think it would be fun to do a prep and cartwheel out, either that or a corkscrew. I also think it might be fun to fly eventually.”
Anything else?
“Mainly I really want to be in the top five for state or just get a banner in the gym. Also, cheer is 100% a sport because it takes physical strength and requires some sort of skill/muscle tone. Sidelines maybe not, but competition is for sure a sport in my opinion.”
Audery Palomo
What is the hardest stunt we’ve done and why?
“Inversions.”
What do you want to improve in cheer and why?
“My jumps because I think I could get more height if I tried harder.”
What is your favorite floor cheer and why?
“‘Look Out We’re Back’ because I get to do a hurkey.”
What stunt do you want to learn?
“I want to learn how to do a basket toss.”
Free say:
“In high school next year, I hope that me and Ayla are in the same stunt group and that we get to do a basket toss together.”
Ayla Payne
What is the hardest stunt you’ve learned so far and why?
“I will say a half-up libs to extension with the twist cradle is the hardest.”
What do you want to improve in cheer and why?
“I love to improve my jumps and my tumbling because I feel like I could do better.”
What is your favorite floor cheer and why?
“‘Look Out We’re Back’ because it’s the easiest and I get to do jumps and extensions.”
What stunt do you want to learn and why?
“A basket toss.”
Free say:
“Next year in high school, I want to base with Audrey and try to get a really high basket toss.”
Brynlee Blunier
The hardest stunt we’ve done so far:
“Probably a half-up extension to lib and then twist cradling out of it because it’s just really hard to get up there and be able to have the balance to twist cradle.”
What you want to improve:
“I would love to improve my tumbling skills because I’m just having a mental block and I know I can do the skills.”
Favorite floor cheer and why:
“‘Look Out We’re Back’ because it’s just the first one we learned. The first one is always my favorite.”
What stunt do you want to learn:
“I want to learn an inversion to extension and then twist cradling out of it.”
Free say:
“Next year in high school cheer, I would love to be a flyer and improve my flying skills and tumbling skills.”
