Hoodies and crewnecks are some of the most popular clothing items today, but they started with very different purposes.
A hoodie is a crewneck with a hood, often including a front pocket. Hoodies originated in the 1930s when clothing companies created them to keep workers warm in cold warehouses and outdoor jobs. Over time, hoodies became popular in sports, hip-hop culture, and streetwear, making them a symbol of comfort and casual style. Today, they are worn by people of all ages for both fashion and function.
Crewnecks are hoodies without a hood and a front pocket, featuring a round neckline. They originated earlier, in the 1920s, when athletes needed comfortable clothing that allowed movement without irritation. Crewnecks were first worn by football players and rowers, which is where the name comes from. As sportswear became everyday clothing, crewnecks grew popular for their simple, clean look. They are often chosen for layering or for a more polished casual outfit.
While hoodies offer warmth and practicality with their hood and pockets, crewnecks provide a classic and minimal style. Both items began as functional clothing and evolved into modern fashion staples that reflect comfort, culture, and personal style.
