In P.E, we are in the middle of a 3 part unit. Hockey, Eclipse Ball, and Pickle Ball. These may be fun activities for you, but they might not. Many people might not know what these activities are, but if you don’t, their is a brief description of what these activities are.
Eclipse Ball: This is a paddle sport that is a combination of elements from tennis, badminton, and volleyball. The net is set up to the highest standard (volleyball height) and teams will work together to hit the ball over the net so it lands in bounds, or forces the opposing team into a fault. Teams are allowed to let the ball bounce one time between hits or they can hit it out of the air. Each side has an unlimited amount of hits but they must make sure to not let it double bounce or double hit. Games are played to 21 or 25 and win by 2.
Hockey: This is one of the units where students are using a stick for game play. Students will start small learning to control the stick/puck as they travel around the gym. They practice passing the puck back and forth while keeping their sticks down. We then have students work on shooting at an open goal. It is important to practice and work on all the safety procedures in this unit before starting game play or else it can be dangerous for students. Game play for hockey in EMS is typically played with 4 goals with 4 separate teams. Students will have multiple pucks in play to score on others goals.
Pickle Ball: Another paddle sport with nets set at the lowest standard. Students will be on teams of 2 or 3 and unlike the normal Pickle ball rules, teams can use up to 2 hits per side. Some key points to pay attention to are the “one bounce rule” for our serve and the “double bounce/hit.” Also, it is important to know and understand the rules of our “Kitchen” area as to what you can and cannot hit in there.
I asked some people which mini unit they liked best. (Pickle Ball, Eclipse Ball, and Hockey.) Here are their responses.
Mrs. Weaver: Pickle ball! Because in hockey, you can get hit in the shins. Also, I have no idea what Eclipse Ball is.
Ayla Payne: Pickle Ball all the way! My team dominates!
Stella Hostetler: Pickle Ball because it’s similar to tennis and badminton and I like both of those.
Adelie Sancken: Pickle ball is the best because it is so fun and so much better than the other too.
Mrs. Rocke: I really like Pickle ball. I love tennis and pickle ball is very similar.
Peter Blunier: Eclipse Ball because it’s like big pickle ball but you have infinite hits.
Jonah Addo Evens: Eclipse Ball because it takes teamwork and you have infinite hits to a side.
