A common debate is Owala vs. Stanley, but there’s more to talk about than that. This week’s opinions focus on burgers vs. hot dogs.
Burgers originated in Germany, specifically Hamburg, in the 19th century. They were called “Hamburg steaks” and included a minced, seasoned beef patty. Later, they were brought to America by immigrants. One reason burgers became so popular is because placing the patty on a bun made them more portable. Today, burgers are commonly eaten as an everyday food. Many popular food chains feature burgers, including McDonald’s, the most well-known fast-food restaurant, as well as Burger King, Wendy’s, White Castle, and many more.
Hot dogs originated in Germany, specifically Frankfurt, in the 13th century. The name came from a cartoon that joked about hot dogs being made from actual dog meat. Later, they were brought to the United States by immigrants, just like burgers. When they arrived in the U.S., they were made from spiced pork. As hot dogs grew in popularity, they began appearing more often—at baseball games, parties, and Fourth of July celebrations. Americans eat about 20 billion hot dogs each year. While hot dogs are not as popular as burgers, they still rank among the most consumed foods in the United States.
