Volleyball is a winter sport played in the months of January and February, during the middle school season. A volleyball game consists of two teams of six players each, separated by a net. The six volleyball court positions are setter, middle blocker, outside hitter, opposite hitter, libero, and serving specialist. Then the two teams will rally—or hit the ball back and forth over the net—until a fault occurs. There is a maximum of three hits per side. The objective is to score points by sending the ball over the net and grounding it into the opponent’s court. Volleyball matches are made up of sets, typically three or five sets. Three-set matches are two sets to 25 points and a third set to 15 points. Each set must be won by two points. The first team to win two sets is the winner of the match.
In PE, we recently started the volleyball unit. I asked people if they like this unit. Here is what they had to say:
Adley Wesner – I think the volleyball unit is very fun for all of us because it is a fun way to get your exercise in and have fun with your friends. Also, it is a good way to connect with others while being on a team.
Ava Wiegand – I think the volleyball unit is really fun because I play volleyball. It is also fun because you can pick one of your friends to be on your team.
Brylie Prina – I enjoy the volleyball unit in PE. I love playing with my friends while playing volleyball, a sport I love.
Cora Holt – I really like the volleyball unit. It’s fun to play and play with other people. It’s a fun way to practice for the upcoming season.
Eleanor Kemp – I like the volleyball unit! It’s pretty fun even though you may not be on your friends’ team; it’s still fun to play. Volleyball is also my favorite sport, so I like the unit.
Elsie Cearlock – Um, I like the volleyball unit most of the time. I like volleyball, and the one-bounce rule makes it easier for your team. But sometimes it’s not as fun because you likely won’t get on the same team as your friends in your class, and also because it’s right before actual school volleyball, so it gets me in a bad habit of trying to let it bounce if it’s a harder ball to get to.
Crey Leman – Volleyball for P.E. is not that bad, but it is not my favorite. It is good if I have friends on my team; then it would be more fun.
Brynn Wilson – I feel like the volleyball unit is fun but boring. The teams aren’t split as I would want them to be, and the nets kind of get in the way… but overall volleyball can get really competitive, especially with the scoring and rules.
Preston Fuller – I think the volleyball unit is cool because you get to learn new sports. Volleyball is kinda boring, and they give us pretty bad teams, so the unit is alright.
Kinleigh Clements – I love the idea of the volleyball unit! I like showing my skills off and seeing how beautiful others are at it.
Hailey Zimmerman – I love to hang out with friends and be crazy during the volleyball unit. I also love the competitiveness of volleyball!
