The Cross Country (XC) season has come to an end, with the girls’ team and two boys making it to state. “They’re great!” (with two thumbs up) says Tony the Tiger — obviously talking about the Eureka cross country team.
This was a wonderful closing season for Coach Bishop, marking her final year coaching cross country.
How long have you been coaching?
6 years
Why did you decide to start coaching?
I challenged myself to run a marathon and was amazed by my ability to do something I had previously considered impossible. It was an incredible feeling and experience. When the coaching position opened up, I was excited about the opportunity to help athletes realize that they, too, could do hard things through hard work, patience, determination, perseverance, and effort — and achieve what they once thought impossible!
If they can learn that they can do more than they thought possible in running, then they know they can do more than they thought possible in anything!
How do you feel about the end of the season?
It’s very bittersweet! I’m relieved to not be as busy, but I miss the time with the kids and the sport. It’s even more sad because this was my last year coaching. I love the sport, the kids, and the cross country family so much! I’ll miss coaching tremendously, but I know it’s time to be more present for my family.
What was your favorite part of the sport?
It brings me great joy to help kids see more of the potential they’ve been given and realize they’re capable of amazing things!
