Halloween Traditions and When to Stop Trick-or-Treating
Halloween has been an American tradition for over 2,000 years. It originally started from a practice called souling in Sweden. Souling was when poor children went door to door asking for items, and in return, they would give out “soul cakes,” which were basically small cakes.
The types of candy people hand out each year can vary depending on the weather — especially whether it’s cold or warm. This matters because chocolate can melt in warmer temperatures. In the past, parents have also been worried about dangerous items being hidden in their kids’ candy, which is especially concerning since most trick-or-treaters are young children.
Nowadays, some people have started giving out healthy snacks instead of candy. Many kids don’t like this because, let’s be honest, kids love candy! Most kids stop trick-or-treating around ages 13 to 15, but some keep going into high school or even college. Many of the older kids just go trick-or-treating for fun and then hang out with friends afterward.
Brady and I think that sounds like a great idea — it’s a fun way to spend time with friends. You can also hang out with friends while trick-or-treating. Some teenagers even go to other friends’ neighborhoods because they’re bigger and have more houses to visit.
Around Eureka, one of the most popular trick-or-treating spots is Eureka Lake. It’s a favorite because a lot of kids live nearby, and there’s tons of good candy in one area. Do you know where you’ll be trick-or-treating this year? If not, make sure to keep Eureka Lake in mind — it always has some of the best candy around!
