Mr. Gundy is an 8th grade math teacher. I asked him what a day in his life is like, and this is his answer:
6:00 AM – Wake up, shower, shave, and get dressed.
6:20 AM – Wake up my daughter so she can get ready.
6:25 AM – Make breakfast, make lunches for myself and my daughter, fill water bottles, and unload the dishwasher—all while listening to the Bible app.
6:50 AM – Brush and floss my teeth and slowly encourage my daughter until she gets dressed, brushes her teeth, and does her hair.
7:15 AM – Leave to go to school.
7:17 AM – Arrive at school and get my room ready for the day by starting my computer and TV, entering grades, and preparing notes and activities.
7:40 AM – Wait outside the 8th grade doors to get my daughter on the bus.
7:50 AM – Return to my room and finish anything I haven’t completed, such as making copies, working on grad school work, or planning basketball practice.
8:12 AM – Head down to the gym for morning assembly.
8:25 AM – Start teaching like my life depends on it—someone has to help these crazy 8th graders learn math!
9:00 AM (ish) – By this time, I have most likely gone full “math nerd” mode, probably mentioned something about basketball, disc golf, or Star Wars, and am starting to get a little hungry.
10:00 AM (ish) – I need a snack. If I don’t eat, I’m about to get really hangry—and no one wants that!
12:12 PM – Lunch—EAT!
12:52 PM – Resume teaching and answer countless questions from Ella, Mylee, and sometimes other students who join in.
2:25 PM – Attend a meeting, cover for another teacher, grade papers, plan for upcoming weeks, or work on grad school homework.
3:05 PM – Watch the students leave and get on the bus.
3:10 PM – Clean up my desk and finish any tasks that didn’t get done throughout the day.
3:45–4:30 PM – Head home and start making supper.
5:00 PM (ish) – Eat supper (yes, we eat early—otherwise we have some angry kids!).
5:30 PM – Play with my kids outside, if possible.
7:30 PM – Get my kids to sleep.
8:00 PM – Do the dishes, relax, pay bills, organize for the next day, and watch TV.
10:00 PM – Go to bed.
That’s a day in Mr. Gundy’s life!
