We interviewed Mrs. Baner, a 5th grade ELA teacher at EMS. She said her day starts off like this:
“For a regular weekday: I wake up around 5:45 a.m. and start getting ready for work until Felicity wakes up, and then I get her ready as well. Once we are ready and packed up, I take her to wherever she is going that day (usually one of her grandmas) and then head to work. I usually get here around 7:30 and prep for my day. Then I go through the daily class schedule.
After work, I pick Felicity up and drive back home. We usually play until about 4:30, when her dad gets home, and then I start making dinner. After dinner we either play outside or watch a movie until it is time to start getting Felicity ready for bed. We do her bedtime routine and she goes to sleep. Then I usually spend about an hour in bed reading or watching TV until it’s time for me to head to bed. Pretty boring life, but that’s what happens when you have a 2-year-old.”
We then interviewed Mrs. Weaver, who is a 7th grade ELA teacher at EMS.
Next, I interviewed Mrs. Weaver, and she said:
“5:30 a.m. – Dogs start pacing around and wake me up. I try to ignore them, but they get more and more obnoxious until Mr. Weaver lets them out.
6:00 a.m. – Get out of bed and get ready for the day. First cup of coffee.
6:30 a.m. – Get my daughter out of bed (against her will) to get her ready for the day. Second cup of coffee.
7:15 a.m. – Miri (my daughter) and I take our stuff to the car. At this point, I usually remember something one of us has forgotten and have to go back and take care of it.
7:20 a.m. – Actually leave. Drive to EMS takes us about 25 minutes because we live in Peoria.
7:45 a.m. – Get to EMS just in time for the bus that takes Miri to Davenport. I drop my lunchbox off in the staff lounge and head back to my classroom. Third cup of coffee.
7:45–8:12 a.m. – Chat with Ms. Worner instead of doing my work.
8:12–8:25 a.m. – Announcements.
8:25 a.m.–12:12 p.m. – Teach the children.
12:12–12:52 p.m. – Listen to Mr. Troutt tell stories at lunch.
12:52–3:15 p.m. – Teach the children.
3:30 p.m. – My daughter gets off the bus and we drive home.
4:00–5:00 p.m. – “Old lady” weighted-vest walking time.
5:00–6:00 p.m. – Cook and feed everyone dinner.
6:00–8:00 p.m. – Hang out with my family and get Miri ready for bed.
8:00–8:30 p.m. – Accidentally fall asleep reading Miri books.
9:00 p.m. – Stumble out of Miri’s room, get ready for bed, go to bed.”
