This Week I Wrote an Article About Cheer
First, I interviewed the coaches.
I spoke with Ms. Haggerty first. She said:
“I first started coaching in 2018! I became a cheer coach because I was very passionate about cheer. Once I graduated high school, I didn’t have the opportunity to continue cheering because I went to a community college that didn’t have a cheer team. So, I decided to begin coaching to still work with cheerleaders and share my passion and knowledge with them.”
Next, I spoke with Mrs. Douglass. She said:
“I first became a cheer coach in 2017 with an All Star team in Bloomington, IL. I was a coach there for 2 years. In 2021, I became the coach for Eureka Middle School cheer, and this will be my 5th season with the team! I wanted to become a coach because not only am I passionate about the sport of cheerleading, but I am also passionate about helping young adults grow their self-confidence and their love for the sport. I truly enjoy watching my cheerleaders start at the beginning of the season with little to no knowledge of the sport and grow their skills into ones that rival what some high school teams do. Being a coach is one of the best jobs because I get to teach both the skills needed for the sport and life skills that will help the cheerleaders in the future.”
Next, I asked the cheerleaders what their favorite part of cheer is:
-
Lainey Adams: “I love stunting and trying new things.”
-
Brynlee Blunier: “Probably the new friends I made. I never would have had the friends I have today if I didn’t try out last year. I also love the stunting aspect. No other sports have that, so it is unique and makes us really strong.”
-
Faith Follmer: “I love the tumbling and stunting tricks and hanging out with friends and other people on the team.”
-
Sophie Gould: “I love stunting, the shenanigans, and making new memories.”
-
Georgia Goveia: “I like how we get to do a variety of things. Unlike other sports clubs, we do cheers, stunts, and tumbling.”
-
Madison Herald: “My favorite part would be learning new cheers and getting stronger. I also like participating in collaborations.”
-
Leela Hinzman: “I think that my favorite part is probably stunting because it’s really fun to learn different techniques to make the flyer look nice in the air.”
-
Melody Kuntz: “I would say that my favorite part about cheer is making memories and learning all of the new cheers!”
-
Audrey Palomo: “My favorite part of cheer is getting to stunt, spending time with my teammates, and cheering at the boys basketball games.”
-
Analeigh Perera: “I love all of the competitions and the games and meeting friends or other cheer teams at them.”
-
Lily Taylor: “My favorite part of cheer is getting to do new stunts and cheers.”
-
Lucy Wettstein: “Stunting, because it’s fun to try different things and with different people!”
