Hello EMS! Have you ever walked outside in the morning only to be blinded by a beautiful sunrise? Or stepped outside at night and been distracted by a gorgeous sunset? These amazing phenomena are the highlights of some people’s days—but which one is better? We asked a handful of students here at EMS for their opinion on this topic, and here’s what they had to say!
Kinleigh Clements
“I think sunsets, because then you end your day with a pretty and colorful sky.”
Stella Hostetler
“I think sunsets are better because I’m usually awake for them, not sunrises. I also have a better view of them from my house. I love sunsets because they are always so beautiful, and I feel like they are more full than sunrises.”
Anna Stapel
“Sunsets! I’m a night owl!”
Mariah Goff
“SUNSET!! Because I feel like there is more color, and it’s more relaxing to me!”
So far, everyone likes sunsets more than sunrises!
There are many reasons people prefer sunsets over sunrises. One of the most popular reasons is that sunsets often have more color and symbolize a better tomorrow. They are also known to bring a sense of peace and calm. Sunsets, also known as “the golden hour,” have captivated the eyes of artists, photographers, and poets around the world.
One example is a painting called Twilight in the Wilderness by Frederic Edwin Church. Painted in 1860, this oil painting is worth $3.2 million and vibrantly captures the beauty of a sunset. Church painted this masterpiece to highlight the Maine landscape during the Civil War. This shows that even in the darkest of times, sunsets could still bring hope to everyone.
Just like sunsets, sunrises can paint the sky with pastel colors and offer a moment for reflection. Sunrises often symbolize new beginnings, hope, and fresh starts. They can also help people feel more awake and ready to start the day. In some cultures, sunrises represent the rebirth cycle and the gift of a new day.
Did you know that the earliest documented use of the word sunrise was in Middle English around 1400, by the poet Geoffrey Chaucer?
Both sunsets and sunrises produce light, provide beauty and inspiration for observers, and bring a sense of peace. They are beloved not only for their meaning but also for their aesthetic appeal.
