This week, I interviewed Ms. Haggerty, an eighth-grade literature and grammar teacher. I asked her a total of 10 questions about herself, and here are her answers.
The first question I asked was, “What do you like to do in your free time?” She responded, “I love to read, hang out with family and my puppy, and re-watch Gilmore Girls!”
After that, I asked, “What is a fun fact or talent that not a lot of people know about you?” She said, “One thing that is interesting about me is that no matter when or where I am, I can always take a nap. I could have a cup of coffee at 8:30 and be asleep by 9!”
The next question I asked was, “If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?” She replied, “Flying, for many reasons! First, I would never have to pay for gas again. I could fly to all the places I want to travel. Plus, other superpowers kind of scare me… like reading minds. I would NOT want to know what others are thinking.”
I then asked, “What’s your favorite childhood memory?” She said, “One of my favorite childhood memories is when my brothers and I would walk to the family-owned bakery up the street and buy their sugar cookies once a week.”
Next, I asked, “What is your dream vacation?” She answered, “I would love to stay in an over-the-water hut in Bali, Indonesia.”
I also asked her a few school-related questions. First, I asked, “What is your favorite book?” She replied, “I love The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. We will actually be reading it in 8th grade during 3rd quarter :)”
Then I asked, “How long have you been teaching?” She responded, “This is my third year teaching!”
Another question I asked was, “What’s your least favorite thing about teaching?” She said, “How long it takes to grade essays! I love reading my students’ work and writing, but it does take a long time.”
After that, I asked, “What is your favorite part of being a teacher, and why?” She responded, “I love getting to know so many different individuals and building relationships with them. I really do care for each of my students. Plus, I love my Christmastime tradition where I bake gingerbread cookies for all of my students.”
Finally, I asked, “Why did you decide to become a teacher?” She said, “I once had a teacher who built up my confidence in my reading and writing abilities. That teacher inspired me to be that person for others. I decided to become a teacher to help my students build confidence in themselves and their abilities in the classroom and beyond.”
