Cookies are a great dessert. But often, people find themselves eating the cookie dough instead of the actual cookie! Which brings us to a big question: Which is better—cookies or cookie dough?
Cookies have been around for a very long time. In America, people eat about 2 to 7 billion cookies per year. Cookies first appeared in Persia around the 7th century, where sugar was first cultivated. Bakers there would use a small portion of cake batter to test whether their ovens were at the right temperature before baking a whole cake. If the temperature wasn’t right, they wouldn’t waste the cake. Over time, these little “testers” evolved into their own treat—and cookies were born!
Today, cookies come in countless flavors and styles, like chocolate chip, peanut butter, snickerdoodle, sugar cookies, and so many more. They’re well-loved around the world and are always a great choice!
Now, let’s talk about cookie dough. Not just any cookie dough—edible cookie dough! Recipes for early versions of edible dough can be traced back to the early 1800s, when “eatable cake mixes” appeared in English cookbooks. Unfortunately, these often included raw eggs, making them unsafe to eat. As a result, they didn’t really catch on. But in the late 1990s, edible cookie dough started to grow in popularity. People rediscovered the idea and transformed it into a safe, ready-to-eat dessert.
Now, you can find cookie dough mixed into all kinds of treats—cookie dough ice cream, cookie dough chocolate bars, and so much more. It’s fun, nostalgic, and just plain delicious!
We asked some people which they liked better, and here’s what they had to say:
Mrs. Fitzgerald:
“This is a really difficult question, but I am going to have to go with freshly baked cookies, still warm out of the oven.”
Sage Knecht:
“Cookies, because they are softer and, in my opinion, better.”
Melody Kuntz:
“I prefer cookie dough over cookies because I love cookie dough in ice cream. Although cookies are delicious too, I think you can put cookie dough in or on a lot of things to make them taste better.”
Mr. Trout:
“My answer is… cookies, I guess.”
Adelie Sancken:
“Cookies, usually, because cookie dough can make you sick if it has raw egg. But I love cookie dough in ice cream.”
Sadie Hoffman:
“I would choose edible cookie dough because then I could pick out the chocolate chips, since I don’t like chocolate.”
So… which do you prefer?
