This week for the Hornet Spotlight, I interviewed Mr. Roth, EMS’s very kind principal who loves his job and working with students.
First, I asked Mr. Roth, “What made you want to become a teacher/principal?” He said, “I would say it was my experience with the teachers and coaches during middle school, high school, and college.”
Then I asked, “What do you like the most about your job?” Mr. Roth replied, “I like the fact that I don’t ever experience the same day twice. Each day is unique.”
Next, I asked, “What is the hardest part about being the principal?” Mr. Roth told me, “I don’t know if it’s ‘hard,’ but there are times when I just wish I had a few more hours in the day.”
I asked him how many years he has been working at EMS. He said, “I came to EMS in 2007. I’ll let you do the math.” That means he has been here for 18 years.
After that, I asked if he had any pets. He answered, “We have one dog named Shelly. She’s a goldendoodle.”
Then I asked, “What subjects did you teach before you were principal?” Mr. Roth said, “I taught 7th grade Social Studies, then 7th grade Math, and then I was the assistant principal.”
Next, I asked, “If you could move anywhere in the world, where would you move and why?” Mr. Roth replied, “I have always wanted to live in Montana or Wyoming. I enjoy the outdoors and think I could get used to living near the mountains.”
Then I asked him, “What are you most excited about this year?” He told me, “I am most excited about the fact that I have a year of experience under my belt. Other than that, I am just excited about getting to know this year’s group of students.”
I also asked, “What are your favorite sports teams and why?” He answered, “St. Louis Cardinals baseball, because my dad was a big fan.”
Finally, I asked, “What is your favorite thing about EMS?” He said, “This is the easiest question—the students. We have so many good kids in this school. Kids who are more mature and nicer than your typical middle school student.”
That is the end of my interview with Mr. Roth. Thanks for reading!
