Getting to Know Mrs. Ogg
Mrs. Ogg is the 7th grade Social Studies teacher, and we thought we should learn a little more about her. So, we asked her a few questions!
First, we asked: Why did you decide to teach Social Studies?
She answered, “I had some great teachers who really impacted me when I was in school, so I wanted to be like them.”
Next, we asked why she wanted to teach 7th grade.
She said, “Honestly… I didn’t… hahaha. I was a little terrified. I started out teaching Kindergarten and 1st grade—hugs all day, giggles and fun. Then I moved to EMS and enjoyed teaching 5th grade Social Studies. One day, our administration came into my room and told me I was going to be moved to 7th grade SS. THAT was hard… I didn’t know anything about 7th graders. BUT, I went—and I ended up LOVING 7th graders because they can think, discuss, and understand at a deeper level; they can work independently, they still have good attitudes, and they’re fun to interact and joke with.”
As you can see—we’re learning new stuff here!
Then we asked what she wanted to be besides a teacher.
She told us, “I wanted to be a wife and mom. I’ve always valued those roles and had a great mother as a role model.”
After that, we asked what drives her insane the most.
Her answer? “People not owning something when they’re wrong—admit it, grow, and move on. None of us are perfect. Accept that :)”
If you ask us, those are words of wisdom right there.
Next came a tough one: What’s your favorite thing to teach in Social Studies?
She said, “Wow, that’s really hard… I honestly love all the topics I cover for different reasons. If I had to pick one, I’d maybe say economics and world geography—because we’re exploring the world around us and learning to understand different countries: how they operate, how we are similar and different, and how our differences aren’t right or wrong—they’re just different.”
We asked what students do that make her happy.
She said, “When people TALK in discussions, wonder about what we’re talking about, ask questions, make connections. I also love seeing students be kind to others and help those around them who may be struggling, just because they’re kind and want to help.”
Then we asked her least favorite thing to teach in Social Studies.
She explained, “Honestly… nothing. I try to make whatever I’m teaching interesting to me and interactive with students so that I CAN enjoy it.”
Now that’s a devoted Social Studies teacher!
Next up: What’s your favorite thing to do outside of school?
Her answer: “Be with our grandbabies, garden, read, and work with my husband to continue developing our ‘homestead’—a dream for someday when we retire.”
We also asked where she’d love to travel someday.
She answered simply: “Alaska.”
Lastly, we asked what other grade she’d teach.
She told us, “I’ve taught preschool, K, 1st, 5th–8th grade art, 5th grade Social Studies, and 7th grade SS. As long as it’s not higher than 8th grade, I could get on board and LOVE it! The grades are all very different, but students have fun qualities at every level. (But I’m secretly hoping I get to stay in 7th grade until I retire—whenever that is…)”
So there you have it—a little about Mrs. Ogg!
