Scholastic Bowl is an academic competition where two teams compete head-to-head to answer questions across various subjects, including history, literature, science, and current events, in a quiz-bowl format. To answer a question, you must hit a buzzer, and then you gain points if you answer correctly. It’s almost like a game show, but for school.
At Eureka, there are quite a few people on the team. There is an A team and a B team, and certain people can be on either team. The coach is Mr. Trout, who is an 8th-grade social studies teacher. We asked him why he decided to be in charge of Scholastic Bowl, and he said, “I used to coach girls’ basketball and girls’ track when I first started teaching at EMS. When my own children got into junior high in another school district, I stopped coaching all sports so I could go to their events. When they got older and had no sports or activities in the spring, and the Scholastic Bowl coaching position became available, I applied because EMS needed a coach. And the rest is history, as they say.”
Next, we asked Jack Wurmnest, who is actually on the team, what he enjoys most about Scholastic Bowl. He answered, “I kind of enjoy it when there is a toss-up and I’m the only one who knows it.”
So there you have it: that’s what Scholastic Bowl is.
