The NBA season is almost over, and the big reward is the MVP trophy. There is really a two-player race between Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokić. Neither of these players is from the USA. That is a trend because the last MVP from the USA was James Harden in 2018. You can tell that basketball is expanding at a rate it has never been before because, before that, there had only been one other international player to win the Most Valuable Player award in a single season.
Now, let us talk about their stats. Jokić is averaging a 29.7 points-per-game triple-double this season. A triple-double has never been averaged in a season except for one time. That time was in 2017 when Russell Westbrook averaged 31 points, 10 assists, and 10 rebounds. When Jokić is on the court this season, the offense is the best in the history of the NBA. When he is off the court, they are the worst in NBA history. That is why he should win MVP.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is averaging 32 points, five assists, and two steals. That is not that good because it’s only two more points than Jokić. He has had a lot of 50-point games this season, though. His team is in first place in the Western Conference standings. He has led a team of extremely young talent for a couple of years now. He got robbed last year, but this year he might rob Jokić of one because Jokić robbed him last year. This is why the NBA is messed up. They robbed Jokić two years ago, so they have to make that up. Then they robbed Shai of last year’s MVP. Now this year, they will give it to Shai for last year. That is cooked.
If Jokić wins MVP, this would be his fourth MVP. There are only five other people to do that: Michael Jordan, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, and LeBron James. If you ask me, that is a pretty good club to be in. He would easily be considered one of the best offensive players of all time. I want him to win the NBA Championship this year so he could be in good GOAT (Greatest of All Time) conversations. I do not want Shai to win because I don’t like him as much as I like Jokić.
