Boys Basketball
This week I am doing an article on boys basketball! Basketball is a really popular team sport where two teams of 5 players compete against each other. To score, you have to throw the ball into the basket. After that, the other team can try to score by stealing the ball, getting a rebound (grabbing the ball after a missed shot), or if the ball goes out of bounds.
Basketball was invented in 1891 by James Naismith at the YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts. He wanted to create an indoor sport that was less rough for students during the cold winter months. The first version of basketball used a soccer ball and peach baskets for goals. The very first game was played on December 21, 1891!
The boys basketball season kicks off soon, so I interviewed one of the boys basketball coaches to see what they are looking forward to this season.
Coach Interview – 7th Grade Coach Gundy
Q: What is your favorite thing about coaching basketball?
A: “I love basketball. I love the strategy and trying to outbattle your opponent.”
Q: What are your plans for this season?
A: “To have a competitive team that encourages and roots for each other.”
Q: How long have you been coaching basketball?
A: “14 years.”
Q: Who do you think will be the hardest team for you and your team to play against?
A: “I do not know the strengths or weaknesses of this year’s 7th grade team, and I don’t know the other 7th grade teams in the area until we play them. So, I can’t give an answer to this question without more information.”
Are you excited for this basketball season? I know I am!
