Girls Basketball
This week I’m writing about girls basketball! Basketball is a sport with 2 teams and a ball. The goal is to score on the other team’s hoops and try to win.
We asked the coaches these questions:
-
How long have you been coaching girls basketball?
-
How many championships have you won?
-
What is the hardest team you’ve ever played?
We asked the players these questions:
-
Do you like basketball? Why?
-
Predict the season record.
-
How long have you played basketball?
8th Grade Girls Basketball
Coach Bayer:
“This will be my 12th season coaching 8th grade girls’ basketball. Before that, I coached 5th–8th grade boys’ basketball for 7 years. I have been part of two state championship teams: 7th grade state champs in 2021 (assistant coach) and 8th grade state champs in 2022 (head coach). The best team I ever remember playing against was a 4A state championship team from Dunlap Valley several years ago.”
Lauren Hambleton:
“Yes, I love basketball because it is very fun and I get to play with a team, and I love doing that. I think our record this year is gonna be 10–10. I have played basketball since kindergarten.”
7th Grade Girls Basketball
Coach Amy Wesner:
“This is my first year coaching at Eureka, but I previously coached for 2 years at Monroe Grade School from 2002–2003. Then I went to Riverview Grade School and coached for 4 years, all at the middle school level. I also coached community basketball teams throughout the last 10 years. My second year at Riverview in 2004, my 8th grade team won Regionals, but we went on to Sectionals and lost to the State champions, Brimfield. They were probably the hardest team I’ve ever coached against.”
Cora Holt:
“Yes, I do, because it’s not like a lot of other sports and it’s fun to play. I think we will do pretty decently. I’ve played since I moved here from England.”
Rome Leman:
“I like basketball because I like being on defense and being aggressive. It’s kind of like cross country too because you have to run up and down the court. I think we’ll be like 20–1 or something like that, I don’t really know. I’ve been playing basketball for 3 years.”
Elsie Cearlock:
“Yes, but volleyball is better. NO CLUE about the record… I’ve played for 3 years.”
