Hello EMS!
Today we have a question: What is the best pet? There are so many different ones to choose from! In the U.S., 71% of people own a pet—that’s a lot of people! Let’s learn some more about these adorable animals.
Pets have been around for… well, a long time! There is evidence that humans had dogs—or wolf puppies—as companions about 12,000 years ago. When archaeologists discovered a Paleolithic tomb in Northern Israel, they also found a person buried with their pet. To reinforce the idea that the dog was a companion, the person’s hand had been placed on the animal’s shoulder.
There are a ton of different kinds of pets. Let’s explore some of the most unusual. Among mammals, there are hedgehogs, capybaras, fennec foxes, and sugar gliders—all unique and adorable! There are also some unusual reptiles and amphibians, such as axolotls and bearded dragons. Very cool! Tarantulas can also be an interesting pet choice.
Now let’s talk about the most popular pets in the U.S. As you might have guessed, dogs and cats are at the top of the list. Dogs are the most popular—they’re cute, fluffy, and love just about everyone. Cats come second; many owners love them because they don’t love just about everyone. Cats usually prefer their owners, which makes the bond feel special. In third place: fish! Owners often describe them as calming to watch as they swim, and they can even help reduce stress.
Other popular pets in the U.S. include hamsters and guinea pigs, birds like parrots, reptiles, farm animals such as horses and chickens, and rabbits.
We asked some people about what their favorite pets are, and these are the responses!
Nella Stoller: “A dog because they’re cute!”
Annalise Wettstein: “Dog!!”
Jaci Fitz: “Dog, even though I don’t have one!”
Sadie Hoffman: “A cat because they are easy to take care of.”
Melody Kuntz: “I think cats are the best!!”
